Questions about using pfSense?

When hardware is a necessity, Netgate offers reliable, high throughput, low power consumption options to fit your networking platform requirements. It runs on FreeBSD and has a web interface to manage the firewall solution or VPN server at a fraction of the cost.

The pfSense project is open source, free software, and distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, you can view the agreement here.

The main difference is going to be performance. The SG-3100 is a faster system and can handle more throughput. It also has the capability of running some of the heavier content filtering packages such as snort more efficiently. Beyond that, the SG-3100 has more ports. If you need more than three networks it is a bit easier to do with the SG-3100 than the SG-1100. You would need to break the switch out into networks using VLANs, there is a great walk-through on how to do just that here.

Netgate offers instructions on how to install, configure, and use pfSense® software to protect your network. Whether you are new to load balancing, traffic shaping, or a seasoned veteran of a network firewall, the documentation offers something for everyone who uses a Netgate appliance.

No. Since it started in 2004, Netgate offers an additional support service for an additional fee.
